GTX100 gas turbines installed at two French paper mills

In both cases, the gas turbines will be used for cogeneration at paper mills, producing steam for the papermaking processes and electricity for supply to EdF (Electricité de France).

ABB Stal AB, Sweden, has received two orders in France for its GTX100 gas turbine. In both cases, the gas turbines will be used for cogeneration at paper mills, producing steam for the papermaking processes and electricity for supply to EdF (Electricité de France). The combined value of the two contracts is over SKr 200 million (US$ 25 million).

The customer for the first unit is Emin Leydier, a paper manufacturer located near Lyons. The cogeneration project is being developed by French company Finergaz and its subsidiary GES. The plant is due to enter commercial service at the end of 1999.

The customer for the second unit is another French paper producer. The cogeneration project is being developed by CCC (Compagnie Générale de Chauffe) and Finergaz. Operation is due to start at the end of 1999.

Each GTX100 unit will produce around 43 MW of electricity. The fuel for the gas turbines will be natural gas, and ABB will also supply the electric generators.

The GTX100, which was launched in 1997, has been optimised for cogeneration and combined cycle applications. Its high level of efficiency in these applications results in low rates of fuel consumption and low emissions of carbon dioxide. The GTX100 is fitted with ABB's new, Advanced EV (AEV) burner, which reduces emissions of NOx (nitrogen oxides) and CO (carbon monoxide) to 15 ppmv when operating on gas fuel. The two plants will thus have a very low impact on the environment.

Cogeneration, the simultaneous production of heat and electricity – also known as CHP (combined heat and power) – offers total fuel utilisation rates of over 80%. It implies significant economic savings and environmental benefits when compared with conventional energy technologies. France is a large market for cogeneration plants and is expected to be an important market for gas turbines over the next few years.
